As of early 2019, it had a population of 288,806. In 2014, the population of the Graz metropolitan area was 605,143. Because of politically and culturally, Graz was for centuries an important center for the Slovenes, more so than Ljubljana, the current capital of Slovenia.
In 1999, the city's historic center was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list, and in 2010 it was expanded to include Eggenberg Palace on the western edge of the town. And also the city was awarded the European Capital of Culture title in 2003 and became a City of Gastronomy in 2008.
Hotspot in Graz
With a place that values education, the group of universities has created rapid progress for Austria's second-largest city. So that the Baroque palace is a pleasant contrast to the 16th-century courtyards and attractive modern buildings with a touch of Bronze Age culture. Also the old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is filled with beautiful architecture including the Burg castle complex with its two Gothic staircases, and the graceful Uhrturm clock tower. Besides a funicular takes visitors uphill. The Mur River rolls through the city and hot springs dot the surrounding countryside.
During Graz's year as European Capital of Culture, new architectural works were erected. The Graz Museum of Contemporary Art (German: Kunsthaus) was designed by Peter Cook and Colin Fournier and is located on the banks of the Mur River. The island on the Mur River is a floating platform made of steel. American architect Vito Acconci designed it and has a cafe, an outdoor theater, and a playground.
